second time _ same river
Another work of self-exploration is ‘second time_the same river’, Nghia Nuyen’s first video work from 2011. Here, the viewer observes the artist swimming across the Isar river in Munich. The walking sequences with the oversized head evoke a picture of caricatures out of a cartoon. Although those have a rather comical aspect, several moments in the river provoke emotions of discomfort, even fear, not least due to the very narrow and subjective perspective of the camera. The video-performance leaves the viewer on the outside, providing the observer with a clear and close picture of the performance. Yet again, an emotional identification is indeed not excluded but any standards of interpretation are however not imposed.
